How addiction can affect spiritual growth.

An assignment that I sometimes have clients complete is a Spiritual Autobiography. It is important to identify critical life incidents that have changed us and certainly the use of alcohol or other drugs have done that. But beyond the use or abuse of substances, there are many things that have been transformation experiences in our lives – people, books, movies, events – that have played significant parts in our human development.

My Definition of Spirituality

Our spirituality, which I define as the vital force that connects us to ourselves and to others, is subjective, internal, and deeply personal. It gives us a sense of purpose and direction. It is the center of the wheel that holds the spokes together over the bumps of life.

Religion vs Spirituality

Religion is the social and communal expression of spirituality. It is collective and bound by the culture in which we live. It involves moral and ethical concepts agreed upon by a group of people who often meet together to reinforce their beliefs. Many people have a difficult time separating religion and spirituality.

Spiritual Autobiography

A Spiritual Autobiography can often help people see how their own beliefs developed through a process that began in the original culture in which they were raised. Often times, this is followed by rebellion caused by a conflict with these original values.

Pursuing Education

The pursuit of education can cause a re-formulation of our concept of God, especially as we experience concerns about social justice and observe the suffering in the world. We are also exposed to mentors, both good and bad, who influence us in the modification and refining of our beliefs.

Substance Abuse Can Hinder Spiritual Growth

The use and abuse of alcohol and other drugs is another significant influence on our spiritual development, just as their use affects us physically and emotionally. Generally speaking, by the time we have “hit bottom” and are beginning to pursue recovery, we have violated many values we once held, are consumed with guilt and shame, and have little or no self-worth. We are on spiritual life-support.

The Path to Spiritual Recovery

The good news is that we do recover! Just as our bodies heal and we learn to survive our emotions, we also experience a spiritual awakening. This can take many different forms but is generally characterized by reduced isolation and increased concern for others as we re-connect to the vital force within us called spirituality.
