Christian Counseling Near Ventura
Introduction to Christian Counseling
“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” Galatians 5:1
And yet so many Christians, just like unbelievers, are enslaved by various addictions, anxiety and depression, busyness and its accompanying stress, unrealistic expectations, and a need to have more – that materialistic obsession that has become the American way.
Common Faith Challenges
I must meet certain standards in order to feel okay about myself.
These standards may be imposed by family, a boss, society, friends, or even self. If we don’t measure up, we feel defective. We become preoccupied with performance and then suffer from fear of failure. This can cause us to either avoid all risks, or to become perfectionists.
I must have the approval of others in order to feel okay about myself.
This false belief leads to the fear of rejection. Symptoms of this kind of fear include feelings of shame, people-pleasing, codependency (the need to rescue and fix others), or withdrawal and isolation.
Those who fail are unworthy of love and deserve punishment.
This fear of condemnation leads to self-condemnation, blaming of self or others, self-induced punishment (“I don’t deserve to be happy”), or bitterness and unforgiveness.
I am what I am; I cannot change; I’m hopeless.
If we believe this lie, we end up feeling alone and hopeless. This leads to isolation and withdrawal as we experience self-pity and inferiority.
